The Board of Education consists of nine members, three of whom are elected annually. They receive no salary for serving on the board. The prime responsibility of the board is to establish policy for the operation of the schools and the education of all children in the district between the ages of five and twenty years. Their job, then, is not to run the schools, but to see that the schools are well run.
Board meetings offer an opportunity to communicate directly with your board members and discuss general policy, district, and educational matters.
Some topics require research. If you think your question may, please consider submitting it to the superintendent prior to the public meeting. This way a comprehensive answer may be given.
Board action on any matter may only be taken at official public meetings.
Board meetings, unless otherwise noted, are held at the Dervitz Education Center, 25 Depew Street and begin at 7:00 p.m.
The September Board of Education Meeting will be held in the Honiss School Gymnasium on Thursday, September 23, at 7:00 p.m.

Special meetings may be called on matters of specific community interest. Emergency meetings may be called to handle business that cannot be delayed until the regular sessions.
Closed sessions may be held to discuss matters of personnel or individual students, land/property acquisitions or lease, attorney/client privilege, the safety and property of the public, etc.
Formal board action on these matters may be taken only at an official public meeting.
Election of Board Members
At the annual school election, voters choose three members of the nine member Board of Education and cast ballots for the proposed school budget for the next school year.
To be eligible to vote, residents must be at least 18 years old on the day of the election and citizens of the United States. Residents must have been living in the state and county for at least 30 days before the election. Anyone registered to vote in general elections may also vote in school elections.
Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Office of the County Clerk, Bergen County Court House Building, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained by registered voters at the David Dervitz Education Center, 25 Depew Street.
